I was born in Kathmandu, Nepal and then lived in La Paz, Bolivia before my family returned to the U.S. where I have lived in different regions, as a child and adult. Starting in college, I have traveled widely in Western Europe, learning to observe and adapt to my environment and to be open to new experiences.
Before discovering learning design, I studied languages — French and English at university and German out of personal interests — and I continue to speak and read French for pleasure while being more limited in my German language skills. Effective communication skills are a natural extension of my interest in language and facilitate my ability to work with individuals from most any background, no matter their experience or expertise. What most excites me are mentoring and working alongside learning designers as we explore the field of learning experience design as well as working with brilliant faculty and subject matter experts to meet the needs of students and the organizations where I work. CuriosityCuriosity drives my energy to be on a continuous path of learning. Learning design gives me the opportunity to expand my knowledge by working with subject matter experts in a never-ending variety of fields.
The learning design field fuels my curiosity as it is currently in a state of constant innovation with continual development of edtech tools and evolving methods for educating and connecting learners. My curiosity extends to my desire to know more about the people I meet and with whom I work. I see every encounter as an opportunity to learn something new. |
CreativityI express creativity in many ways from woodworking and cooking exotic foods in my personal life to producing publications, videos, course site design, and interactive elearning modules in a professional capacity. These are the tangible artifacts of my creativity.
Learning design allows me to apply creative approaches to my intellectual work with faculty and other subject matter experts. It inspires me to advance learning experience solutions that effectively engage students in order to motivate them to be fully active in their learning. |
Technical Know-howFed by my curiosity and a drive to expand creative opportunities, I have developed a repertoire of technical skills through books and online training, knowing that the answers are often a quick search away for how to write the correct code, how to make a photo look a certain way, how to add a particular affect to a video, how to build a website with WordPress, and so on. I know that if I have a question someone has already asked it and been given an answer. I am lucky to live in such a connected world that allows me to easily grow my skills and knowledge base and share it with others. This is enhanced by taking every opportunity to study the experts and learn from those more skilled than me.
